Week 5: Sejahtera Sustainable Development

For this weeks class, we learned about Sejahtera Sustainable Development. Sejahtera means being in good condition, the human condition wherein everybody is in a prosperous, healthy and peaceful condition. The sejahtera concept encourages us to contribute to the harmony and betterment of the family, the society and the nation. In Malaysia, the concept of sejahtera can be seen as the local implementation of sustainable development. In addition to this, we can see nowadays that this concept is being implemented at many places all around Malaysia.

Some examples of the sejahtera concept being implemented in Malaysia are:

  • Klinik Sejahtera
  • Tandas Sejahtera
  • Yayasan Sejahtera

During this week's class, we went to the IIUM Book Festival. At the festival, there were many types of books, from Islamic books, children's books and even educational textbooks.

However, one of the most interesting books I found there was a book about sustainable development. This book explores the Islamic perspectives and approaches in science and sustainable development.

Islam places a strong emphasis on education and knowledge. "Iqra," which means to read, was the first word of the first verse of the Quran when it was revealed. The significance of reading, learning, contemplating, and researching is emphasized throughout the Quran. There are many benefits of reading in Islam. Thus, we should all use this as motivation to start reading again!
