Week 9: Field Works - On Campus Observation

On week 9 of class, we discussed IIUM as a sustainable campus and how students can be agents of change. A sustainable campus is a campus that practices sustainability, educates not only its students, but also other citizens, regarding sustainable development, provides pertinent perspectives on pressing social issues, gives staff and students the freedom to take initiative, and prioritizes sustainability. The six common indicators for campus sustainability are the setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water, transportation and education and research.

Some examples of IIUM as a sustainable campus and practicing sustainability are:

  • IIUM Mahabbah Food Bank
  • CFS Sejahtera Room
  • Recycling Station
  • IIUM Covid-19 Relief Fund
  • UNiRIDE ECOTOUR

There are still many examples of IIUM practicing sustainability but I cannot list them all. From this, we can see that every campus should start practicing sustainability within the campus first to encourage students to later practice it outside too.

Let's do our part and fulfill our Amanah to the earth!
