This week we learned about Maqasid al Shariah and Sustainable Development. Maqasid al Shariah is realizing the well-being of humans entails enhancing people's welfare, or benefit (maslahah), on the one hand, and averting harm (mafsadah) on the other. The ultimate goal of Shariah is to safeguard the five fundamental goals of the religion in order to advance and preserve human and natural welfare. The five Maqasid al Shariah are Hifz al-Din (religion), Hifz an-Nafs (life), Hifz al-'Aql (intellect), Hifz al-Nasb (lineage) and Hifz al-Mal (wealth).
These goals are very similar to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations. The majority of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are in line with the spirit of Islamic law even though they were not created with a religious perspective.
Therefore, we can see that the SDG goals are aligned with Islamic teachings so let us all practice these goals while also getting rewards for practicing the Islamic way of life!
